COMMUNITY LEARNING COURSES 2024

Community Learning offer short courses for adults living in North Somerset (minimum age 19) to help build skills and confidence for work, volunteering and wellbeing. Priority places are given to those who are in receipt of certain benefits or with few or no qualifications. All our courses are FREE for priority learners. Due to our funding each person can attend only one course at a time – and are welcomed and encouraged to join follow-on courses. 

ESOL – English for Speakers of Other Languages

Learning English as a Second Language for Pre-Entry (no English) to Entry 1 (some conversational English) in Weston-Super-Mare and Clevedon. The courses are designed for those with no confidence and those taking their first steps into classroom learning. Participants will learn about other existing provision and have help to progress to higher levels with Weston College.

Becoming A Novelist

On-line course

Do you have ideas for a novel but you’re not sure how to put them together? This 8-week course issuitable for beginners and more experienced writers. You will be exploring many of the techniques of story writing with the guidance and support of our creative writing tutor.

Access to a laptop or computer is required.

Starts Monday 15 January and delivered over 8 weeks with tasks being sent out on a Monday to be completed by Friday.

Introduction to British Sign Language

Learn basic BSL to communicate better with those who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Learn finger spelling alphabet, how to introduce yourself and have an initial conversation with someone who uses BSL.

Prepare to Pass the Driving Theory Test

This short course can give you the tools for a career in administration. Content includes Word, PowerPoint and Excel – to improve skills for work. Includes – how to insert tables and charts, create presentations, and add formulas and functions. Learn how to create ‘signatures’ and ‘out of office’ replies used in business emails. Tips for proof reading, avoiding scams, and staying safe online.

Prepare to Work in Adult Social Care

Gain a Level 1 Award in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care.

Learn about ways of working in this meaningful role that will help you prepare for a successful interview. Carers and personal assistants make a difference every day supporting vulnerable or disabled adults. There are a wide variety of opportunities, from helping someone in a care home with daily activities to assisting someone with a disability to live independently. In this course you will explore the range of service provision and roles within adult social care. Understand principles such as Duty of Care, Person Centred Care and confidentiality. Build-up confidence in your skills, qualities and abilities to prepare for a career in Care.
